CHOO CHOO CABOOSE and Tech Basketball.

Hello Daylily Friends,

As I prevously reported on Nov. 23, 2012, I have been trying to convert Lee Pickles' CHOO CHOO CABOOSE.  What a beautiful red daylily!  It is a dormant, and so it is particularly important as to when the effort is made to get it converted.  Trying to convert it too late in the fall might be "unfortunate."  I began my conversion effort on October 20, 2012, and this may have been too late.  I think that it may have been better if I had started the conversion process a month earlier.  Anyway, I am where I am, and there is certainly hope that I'm on the "progress road."  I'm going to show four pictures.  Plant #1 looks to me like it is the one that is converted.  Plant Number #2 also looks like it could be converted.  Both have grown very slow, and seem to have thicker foilage.

Plants #3 and #4 both could be converted, but I'm a little skeptical.  Both have the appearance of a conversion, but they don't seem quite as hard or as sufficiently stiff as other daylilies that I've converted.  Still, I've got to go the entire distance with what I've done.  Who knows, one of these two daylilies could be the path to success.  This is why I normally like to treat five daylilies when I'm trying to create a conversion.

I thought that I might also show a picture of CHOO CHOO CABOOSE.  I don't know where I got this picture, or even if I took the picture.  I just think that the daylily is nice.  It has very good branching and plenty of buds.  I agree with Lee that this daylily has plenty of potential as a tetraploid.

On another note, this afternoon I went to Georgia Tech's new basketball arena to see Tech play Miami.  The arena was fabulous.  Former Head Coach Bobby Cremins was there, as was James Forrest, Jon Barry and Dennis Scott, all great former players for Tech.  It was all good, except that our team played so poorly that we were beaten by Miami by 20 points.  In fact, we only scored 49 points.  I had hoped that we would be better this year, but at this point I'm not encouraged.

Well, that's the news today.

  1. Hi Bill,

I am so excited about the possibility of using Choo Choo Caboose as a tetraploid. Thanks for attempting the conversion. CCC has great branching, great bud count, and a great color. For me, the form could be a little better and brought up to current times. I just think about using it with something like Larry's HOME OF THE FREE or David's BARBARA MANDRELL. I will keep my fingers crossed.

  2. Thanks Lee. I will probably increase the heat in the Greenhouse to a minimum of 55 degrees this coming week-end. This should cause CHOO CHOO CABOOSE to push itself and begin to grow. Even if I don't reach the full conversion on this attempt, I will nevertheless use the same four plants to treat again. I'm sure that I will get the project completed.

I like your idea about the crosses. I've got one beautiful red flower that is a small, 4 1/2" red that I want to use it with as well.
