Diana Celebrates!

Hello Daylily Friends,

I regret that I have not posted in the past few days but I have been busy. My beautiful wife Diana Rae just celebrated her 60th birthday. When she woke up on the morning of April 16 I presented her with a nice, carefully selected card that I chose at the local Walgreen store. Then, when she came downstairs she found all of the beautiful flowers that I had vased for her to enjoy. We had a wonderful day and then we went to dinner at a small Italian restaurant that is about five minutes from the house. She had a good day but still did not know that the best was yet to come.

I asked Diana what she wanted for her birthday gift, and she said "something shiney that goes from 0 to 120." So, I bought her a new bathroom scale! Just kidding. I bought her a new dress and some some shoes Chadwicks.

Our daughter Kelley Rae and her husband Michael prepared a birthday party that took place on Friday evening, April 17. Many friends came, and it was a wonderful time of fun. Everyone brought flowers, then told Diana why the flower they brought reminded them of her. We had a wonderful evening of outdoor dining and celebrated until about 11:00 p.m. Can't stay up much longer than 11:00 p.m. Here is a picture of Diana's birthday cake, and Diana and friends enjoying her party. Kelley sure surprised her mother with the wonderful birthday party!

Out in the greenhouse I had a splended adventure on Diana's birthday. I had a beautiful purple to bloom. The cross is long, and it is as follows: [[Spiney Sea Urchin x (Heartbeat of Heaven x Johnny Cash)] x Cerise Masterpiece] x [[Spiney Sea Urchin x (Heartbeat of Heaven x Johnny Cash)] x Cerise Masterpiece]. Here is a picture: The new purple first caught my attention because it is so tall. Indeed, it is 35" tall with 3-way branching, along with two large proliferations. It has 19 buds with a flower that is 5 1/4 to 5 1/2 inches in diameter. I now identify this beauty as Seedling 9-33. Here is a picture. I liked 9-33 so much that I took it from its one gallon container and put it in a three gallon container. The depth of the purple color and the balanced edge and green throat make this purple one that will be admired by many who visit the greenhouse over the next several weeks.

My friend Larry Grace is coming to visit tomorrow and I am looking forward to his visit. More news will come after Larry's visit.

Bill

  1. Happy Birthday Diana and hope you have many more!! 9-33 looks good Bill. It looks like it has a nice gold edge on it and a very dark throat. Larry Grace will have a great time looking at your seedling from the few that you have showed us here. David From SC

  2. Happy Birthday Mrs. Waldrop. I will be at the meeting this afternoon. Love the new seedling. It looks like Karen Stephens, Kinebrew's new intro, but curled in. I like the light to dark purples. The Gold edge adds a nice effect. Luke

  3. Mr. Bill,
Tell your wife HAPPY BIRTHDAY for me.
Your seedling 9-33 looks great. The deep purple color, roundness of bloom and gold edge really shows off this lily. Have a good visit with Larry Grace and don't let him talk you out of any good seedling. Keep up the good work.

  5. Mr. Waldrop, Have you introduced Midnight on Kennesaw Mountain. The plant does wonderfully in my garden and deserves to be regestered.
