DAHLONEGA GOLD?

Hello Daylily Friends,

I'm still struggling to find just the right name for Seedling 8-196.  It has to be a majestic name; a name that is understood to communicate something important.  After seeing one of my deep orange daylilies, one of my friends, Alex Gary, suggested the name, DAHLONEGA GOLD.  I immediately decided that, indeed, I would use the name, and I just kept it in mind while looking for the right, orange daylily with height and branching.  Then, today, I had the idea of naming Seedling 8-196, DAHLONEGA GOLD.  Diana Rae, however, is of the opinion that the color of 8-196 and gold are not the same.  So, I'm posting a picture that I took yesterday morning, and I would ask for your multiple opinions.  Here are the questions:  (1) Does the color of Seedling 8-196 reasonably match the color of Gold?  (2)  If there is a reasonable match, what is your opinion of the name, DAHLONEGA GOLD

Dahlonega is a city in north Georgia where gold was discovered.  There was even an office in Dahlonega for the making of gold coins.  However, the turbulent times and the beginning of the Civil War brought gold mining in Dahlonega to an end.

Looking forward to receiving your opinions.

Bill

  1. It's a winner, but the wife's right on the money...something with gold in it isn't a fitting name. How about Marietta Moonlight, Marietta Triumph, Marietta Jackpot, Marietta Big Bird or Marietta Full Moon?

  2. I like Big Bird, What about banana split? Or "Raw Power" a pun on the Egyptian sun god and the size of the plant.

  3. Bill,

I'm in full agreement with Diana. (She'll have to bake me a pie now.) This is a lemon yellow daylily and having gold in the title isn't appropriate. I would say reserve the name for a truely gold daylily in the future. Great name, don't get me wrong. When I think of gold daylilies I think of daylilies like Bill Norris or daylilies in that color scheme. Hope this helps!

  5. I like Luke's idea of using a pun on the Egyptian sun god but how about Ra's Muse as though the Sun God takes his inspiration from the stunning size, bold yellow color and awesome beauty of this flower?

  6. Hello Daylily Friends,

I am heartbroken. I finally convinced my beautiful wife Diana Rae that DAHLONEGA GOLD was the proper name. So, then this past Sunday I sent a message to Kevin, our Registrar, to reserve the name "DAHLONEGA GOLD." Then Kevin wrote back and said the name was spelled incorrectly but was taken. How could this be? How could someone from Florida take the name of our Georgia gold? I just haven't been able to get over this. Oh well. Back to the drawing board on the name.

    I'm crying myself a river.

  7. By George I think I've got it! The name I would like to propose for this beautiful daylily is The Head Cheese.

  9. I understand your heartbreak at finding a name that resonated with you and dissapointment that it is not an option...but how wonderful for the daylily community that this is a problem for breeders!! So many people enjoy this past time that the number of registered plants has exploded in the past twenty years and I hope to see much more of the same (as long as most are high quality beauties like yours). Always seems to me that those who use a certain geography, like their home garden location as a starter have a reasonable chance. How about incorporating Kennesaw into the name as you've done with some others. Maybe Kennesaw Rising Sun or Kennesaw Shing Orb? I really like the idea that the color is more reminiscent of strong sunshine and still like the idea of tying to sun in some manor. Hope you find something you like soon so you can overcome this minor setback. Happy Hybridizing!

  10. Bill,

Wow, sorry someone must have been reading your blog, liked the name and reserved it. If they were a decent person, they would give you the rights to it back to you. We will know who the thief is when they introduce a daylily using that name. That's not right. There are some shady people in this world. Take your time in naming that yellow. It's a VERY nice yellow and I'll be wanting it when you introduce it. Switching gears, your Blazing Cannons had it's first bloom today. Boy it's huge! I'll email you a picture. Thanks for sending it to me!

  12. Bill,

Well, looks like I was wrong. William pointed out it was used some years ago. So, I guess it is back to the drawing board.

  14. Hi Zachary,

I really like your name suggestions. They are just what I've been interested in finding. Like you, I particularly like the City of Dahlonega because when I was a child I attended a Methodist Youth Camp there that is called "Camp Glisson."

Thanks again for the name suggestions!

  17. You could also use VILLA RICA in the name since it was also a gold mining town. So if you are really stuck on gold you could name it VILLA RICA GOLD. =)Or you could call it VILLA RICA GOLD MINER.
